Capacity is in decimal gigabytes, as printed on the card. ProRes is variable bit rate, so real files can be a little smaller or larger than these Apple target rates: leave some headroom.

How long will my HyperDeck card last?

Recording time is a division: the capacity of the card divided by the data rate of the codec you record in. This calculator uses the target data rates Apple publishes for every ProRes flavour, frame size and frame rate, adds the audio you are recording, and does the arithmetic for you, in both directions.

Why the same card gives very different times

Frame size and frame rate multiply the data: UHD carries four times the pixels of HD, and 50p carries twice the frames of 25p. The codec then sets how hard each frame is compressed, from ProRes 422 Proxy at the small end up to ProRes 4444 XQ. Switching a 1080p25 recording from ProRes 422 HQ to ProRes 422 LT, for example, roughly halves the space it needs. The table next to the result shows every codec for your chosen format at once.

Audio counts too

Embedded audio is uncompressed PCM. At 24-bit and 48 kHz each channel adds 1.152 Mb/s, so a 16-channel recording adds about 18 Mb/s. Small next to video, but it adds up on long events.

GB, GiB and "my card shows less"

Card makers count in decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), and so does this calculator. Your computer may show the same card as a smaller number in binary units (GiB), and the file system takes a small share too. That is why a 512 GB card never gives you exactly 512 GB of footage.

What it does not cover

Only ProRes is included for now, because Apple publishes exact figures for it. Which codecs, frame sizes and media a particular HyperDeck can record depends on the model, so check your model's specification before planning a shoot around a setting.

FAQ

Quick answers.

How many hours of ProRes 422 HQ fit on a 512 GB card?

At 1920 × 1080 and 25p, ProRes 422 HQ is about 184 Mb/s for the video, which with two audio channels comes to roughly 6 hours on a 512 GB card. At UHD 25p the same codec is about 737 Mb/s, so the same card holds about 1.5 hours.

Why is my recorded file smaller or larger than the calculator says?

ProRes is a variable bit rate codec: simple pictures need fewer bits than detailed ones. Apple's figures are targets, so real recordings of calm, clean pictures can come out smaller, and noisy or very detailed ones larger. Plan with a margin.

Does this work for any ProRes recorder, not just HyperDecks?

Yes. The data rates belong to the codec, not to the recorder, so the numbers apply to any device that records ProRes at the same frame size and rate. What differs is which settings each device supports.

What is the difference between 25p and 50i here?

Interlaced formats record the same amount of data as progressive at half the rate, so 50i uses the 25p row and 59.94i uses the 29.97/30p row, as in Apple's own table.

Does the tool send my settings anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser. The only thing we count is that the tool was used, with no personal details.

Can I control several HyperDecks from one screen?

Yes, that is what HyperRoll does: it controls up to 16 Blackmagic HyperDecks from one window over Ethernet, with playlists, in/out points and frame-accurate countdowns. There is a free 7-day trial.

Controlling HyperDecks for real?

HyperRoll controls up to 16 Blackmagic HyperDecks from one window over plain Ethernet: playlists, in/out points, frame-accurate countdowns and a Stream Deck API. Try it free for 7 days.
